The war-themed film, Evil Unbound, premiered nationwide on Sept 18, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression (1931–45) and the World Anti-Fascist War.

On Sept 20, the creative team will visit Quzhou in East China's Zhejiang province, for a historical exploration.

The film revisits the horrific World War II-era human experiments conducted by Japan's notorious biological and chemical warfare unit 731. Its national release on Sept 18 coincides with the 94th anniversary of the Sept 18 Incident in 1931, which marked the start of Japan's invasion of China.

"Quzhou was a key city in Zhejiang's resistance against Japanese invasion and a focal point in the global fight against fascism," said Xu Liwang, secretary-general of the Zhejiang Historical Society and director of the Institute of History at the Zhejiang Academy of Social Sciences.

"Evidence suggests Quzhou was the first Chinese city targeted by Unit 731's plague attacks, suffering several large-scale biological warfare incidents," Xu explained.

Zhao Linshan, director of the film, emphasized that the team's visit aims to explore ways to preserve and pass on this historical memory. "I admire Quzhou's persistent pursuit of justice and truth, such as establishing the exhibition hall of evidences of crimes committed by Unit 731 at the original site," he said.

"By exposing their crimes, we aim to ensure this history becomes a shared memory for all nations and humanity," Zhao said. "We hope to convey historical responsibility and foster peace through artistic expression."
