Flood threatens central China's major water diversion area
( 2003-07-17 10:54) (Xinhua)

The Dujiatai area, one of the Yangtze River's major flood diversion areas located in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province in central China, witnessed a record water level of 26.77 meters Wednesday.

The figure is 0.07 meters higher than the previous record set in 1998, according to the city flood control headquarters.

Since July 12, the flooding has torn open parts of the dikes in the diversion area, and to date, more than 1,000 affected residents have been relocated, with no casualties reported.

The diversion area is about 12,000 hectares wide and is home to90,000 residents.

By 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, the flooding had affected about 10,000 hectares of farmland, of which 1,786 hectares will produce no harvest this year, resulting in direct losses of 22.11 million yuan (2.66 million US dollars), according to flood control officials.

The Wuhan municipal flood control headquarters says the water level of the Yangtze River has dropped somewhat and they will workhard to protect the lives and property of local residents in the diversion areas.
