Part-time jobs build life skills for students
( 2003-09-17 10:17) (Shen Zhen Daily)

It’s very popular for students to have a part-time job on holidays. Some students also do their part-time job on weekdays. They try to make money by different kinds of jobs. Some work as waiters or waitresses in restaurants. Some sell flowers and newspapers. Some college students are busy with their tutoring work.

I’m so excited to see that there are so many working chances for students. It’s really beneficial for them.

First of all, part-time jobs can help students be independent and know more about the society. In contrast, students who haven’t had a part-time job probably rely on getting help from others, such as teachers and parents. Lacking the independent decision-making skills that a part-time job creates they have no chances to solve the problems themselves.

Secondly, a part-time job in business can help students be competitive, otherwise they’ll lose to their competitors. Making money gives students a feeling that they’ve grown up. And a part-time job can also make the students be confident in themselves.

Thirdly, a part-time job can not only reinforces what students have learned in class but can also make them apply their knowledge in practice. Besides, it can teach the students many things they can’t learn in classes or from books. If a college student works as a tutor, he’ll learn how to make himself be understood and how to be an efficient teacher. If the students happen to work at a restaurant such as KFC or McDonald’s, they’ll have to prepare themselves to be continually patient and friendly. They’ll also learn how to be considerate and also learn how to promote new products.

In these cases, they’ll try to find some problem-solving methods they’ve learned in classes to solve the problems in work. They might even find their knowledge is not enough to solve the problems. That will make them study harder.
