First emergency shelter prepared for use in Beijing
( 2003-10-02 11:11) (Xinhua)

China's first emergency shelter was opened for operation on Wednesday in Beijing, capital city of China.

The shelter, located in the Yuan Capital Relics Park in the eastern part of the city, was designed as a safe haven for Beijing residents in case of disasters such as earthquake or fire.

In the next few years, the city will build more than 1,000 such shelters, including temporary shelters in sports grounds and large parks, said Xu Ping, deputy director of Beijing Seismological Bureau.

The shelter in the park is equipped with power and water facilities and public telephones, fire-prevention facilities, restrooms and storehouses. It also houses headquarters, epidemic prevention stations, and specialized living zones, and even a helicopter landing pad.

The city now has 5,300 hectares of land that can be used for emergency shelters, including 140 parks, covering an area of 4,760 hectares.
