Netherlands to help Beijing solve traffic problem
( 2003-10-14 00:20) (Xinhua)

The Netherlands will provide a training program for Beijing to solve its traffic problem, said a visiting Dutch official Monday.

M.J. Olman, deputy director-general for passenger transport of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management (TPWW), said the one-week program will train about 40 Beijing officials, police officers and citizens in the use of the Intelligent Transportation System (ITS).

Dutch Minister of TPWW Karla Peijs, who is visiting Beijing, said the Netherlands will improve cooperation with China in the fields of transportation, aviation and water management.

The Netherlands carried out ITS pilot projects in 11 Chinese cities, including Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Jinan, Olman said, noting the projects will be evaluated to decide follow-up cooperation subjects.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines Director of Government and Industry Affairs, Roeland van Klaveren, said the company will increase non- stop flights to Beijing and Shanghai, the two current destinations.

"We will add six Chinese cities to our new destinations lists and we hope to provide daily service to Beijing and Shanghai," Klaveren said.

According to an agreement signed here Monday, KLM will provide a cargo plane service between Shanghai and Dutch cities, Klaveren said.
