Traditional Chinese medicine to be explored for AIDS prevention

The China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Pharmacy (CATCMP)
set up Wednesday a branch for AIDS prevention in Zhengzhou, capital of central
Henan Province. The branch, located in the Henan college of traditional Chinese
medicine, aims to systematically explore the application of traditional Chinese
medicine in AIDS prevention and treatment.
Li Junde, secretary general of CATCMP, said the branch will promote and
research the use of traditional Chinese medicine in AIDS prevention and
treatment, with emphasis placed on theory, clinical practice and new medicine
research and development.
AIDS has spread to more than 210 countries and regions since the first case
was detected in 1981. By the end of 2002, the number of HIV/AIDS patients
detected worldwide had reached 69.8 million, 27.8 million of whom had died.
HIV/AIDS has infected at least one million people in China since the first
case was found in 1985.
The Chinese government has increased spending to more than two billion yuan
(some 240 million US dollars) to prevent the spread of the disease.
