China marks Journalists Day
( 2003-11-05 17:25) (Xinhua)

China will mark its third  Journalists Day on Nov. 8 with a range of celebration activities,  including a singing contest, in the  city of Shenzhen in southern  Guangdong province.

China has 750,000 journalists, according to the All-China  Journalists Association. About 100 representatives from 200 media  organizations are gathered here to "recall history and march to  the future", the theme of the celebrations, which will last from  Nov. 4 to 8.

Lectures, talks, award ceremonies, and parties were being  staged to entertain journalists and enhance exchanges, said a  spokesperson for the organizing committee under the All-China  Journalists Association.

The Journalists Day, first marked in 2001, by the All-China  Journalists Association with the approval of the State Council, is one of only three national days for professionals. The other two  are Teachers Day and Nurses Day.

Since its founding, the All-China Journalists Association  decided to hold celebrations in one of China's major cities each  year and it is Shenzhen's turn this year.

The singing contest, an event of the celebrations, is already  underway, with 127 contestants from more than 30 media delegations.
